About us
Who runs Renewable Energy Tools, how our renewable energy guides are researched and sourced, how the calculators are tested, and how the site is funded.
Renewable Energy Tools explains renewable energy in plain English and turns it into numbers you can use. The guides cover how solar, wind, hydropower, geothermal, biomass and ocean energy work, what they cost and how much power they supply. The calculators help you size solar panels, estimate wind power, price your electricity and EV charging, and plan backup power.
Who we are
The site is researched and written by Izhar Ahmad Danish, Independent Blogger. Izhar researches renewable energy data from the EIA, NREL and IEA, writes the guides on this site and builds its free solar, wind and electricity calculators.
How we work
- Primary sources first. Statistics come from the US Energy Information Administration (EIA), the National Laboratory of the Rockies (NLR, formerly the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, NREL), the International Energy Agency (IEA), IRENA, Ember, the Department of Energy and manufacturers' data sheets. Each page lists its sources and states the year of the data.
- Tested formulas. Every calculator runs on a shared library with automated tests against hand-worked examples. The formula is shown on each page.
- Kept current. Prices and statistics change. Each page shows when it was last updated, and we refresh rate-based pages when new EIA data is released.

Portraits of scientists and inventors in our history sections come from Wikimedia Commons. We only use images that are in the public domain or released under a Creative Commons licence, and each caption names the author (where known), the licence and a link to the original file. Icons and diagrams are our own.
How the site is funded
The site is free and will be supported by advertising. Advertisers have no influence on our content, numbers or recommendations, and ads are never placed between calculator inputs and results.
